Applying for Discord's Message Content intent

If you run Wallu with your own bot token, Discord may ask you to apply for the privileged Message Content intent for your application. This used to only affect bots in 100+ servers, but Discord now also requires a manual review for bots in servers with 10,000+ members.

You can often skip this entirely

If you only use your own bot token for the custom avatar, migrate to Wallu's built-in custom avatar instead: Custom Bot page -> Migrate to built-in custom avatar. No token and no intent application needed. For a custom name, give Wallu a server nickname.

The form is in the Discord Developer Portal under your application. The suggested answers below reflect how Wallu processes data - see our privacy policy and terms. If you use your bot token or its data for anything besides Wallu, you must adjust the answers to cover that use too.

Suggested answers

Can users opt-out of having their message content data tracked? - Yes

Any Discord user can run the bot's /opt-out command. The bot stops processing and storing their messages.

Are you storing message content data off-platform (outside of Discord)? - Yes

The bot stores message content on Hetzner servers (EU data centers): mainly channels and messages server admins deliberately import as a knowledge base (e.g. a public #faq channel the bot answers from), and recent questions for optional features like Advanced Insights.

Are you storing user message content data for 30 days or less? - No

Live message content is deleted within 30 days, but encrypted backups expire within another 30 days - so including backups it can exist up to ~60 days, and the accurate answer is "No". Stored messages (including imported knowledge-base channels) are regularly re-checked against Discord within that window: content is re-imported fresh, and if a message was deleted on Discord or the bot lost access to the channel, the stored copy is deleted too - nothing is ever kept as a stale copy older than 30 days.

How do users contact you to request deletion of their activity data? - suggested text (adapt):

Users can run the /opt-out command in Discord to stop all processing of their messages, or contact us at <your support channel or email>. The bot's service provider (https://wallubot.com) also handles deletion requests at [email protected] or https://wallubot.com/discord, and message content is automatically deleted within 30 days (https://wallubot.com/privacy).

Are you encrypting the data that you store at rest? - Yes

Message content is encrypted at rest (see the privacy policy).

Will the message content data be used to train machine learning or AI Models? - No

Message content is never used to train AI models, and the AI providers involved are bound by API terms that prohibit training on it (listed in the privacy policy).

Why do you need the Message Content intent? - suggested text (describe your own server and use case in your own words):

The bot reads messages in our support channels to automatically detect questions and answer them using the knowledge base we configured (FAQs, documents, website content, imported knowledge channels). It needs the Message Content intent because members ask questions as normal messages - they don't mention the bot or use a command.

Please provide links to screenshots and/or videos that demonstrate your use case

Take a screenshot of your bot answering a member's question WITHOUT the bot being mentioned, upload it and paste the link here.

The member must not mention the bot or use a command

Bots that only respond when @-mentioned don't need the intent, so a screenshot where the bot is mentioned would undermine your application.

Example of what it should look like (use a real screenshot from your own server with your own bot):

Example: the bot answering a member's question without being mentioned
